The Roosters’ Crow

We have been terribly negligent in posting the information that we covered at the meeting. Our apologies. Since not everyone could make it that day, we’ll summarize here:

  • Pickup is every Thursday, 12-2 and 4-6. It will run 17 weeks, through October 7th. There will be an 18th week on Thursday, November 18th, the week before Thanksgiving.
  • If we plan to be gone during pickup, we’ll put a sign-in sheet on the egg cooler. Please find your name and check it off.
  • If you are going to miss pickup, we’d really appreciate it if you’d let us know by noon Wednesday. This helps us during harvest.
  • If you want to have someone else pick your box up, that’s just fine.
  • We’ll have a “swing week” pickup on Thursday, October 14th. If you miss a week during the season, and you let us know about it ahead of time, you’ll be able to make up your missed box on swing week.
  • We are raising meat chickens.  We are NOT selling meat, but anyone who is interested in coming to “harvest day” is welcome. You can just come watch, or if you want you can participate. If you do participate, and you want to take home the fruit of your labors, you can buy the live chicken from us for somewhere around $15. We’ll show you what to do with it from there.

Some of our neighbors have let us know that it’s time to get those chickens gone. Guess they don’t like to hear multiple roosters crowing all night long. To that end (and in rather a hurry) we’re going to do the first round of chicken killing this Saturday, July 24. We’ll start at 7:30 AM. More info to follow in a day or two. If you’re planning to come, schedule at least a couple of hours, and maybe more, just to be on the safe side. We’re only going to do roosters this weekend, and we’ll schedule another day in a couple of weeks for the hens, so if Saturday doesn’t work for you, no worries.

And for this week’s produce, we think:

  • Green cabbage
  • Snow peas
  • AND Snap peas
  • Beets
  • Chard

Yum.
